Reading Re-Kindle-ing

One of my many hobbies, and I think my second favorite overall, is reading. I was one of the very few students in my class (probably whole school) who would get excited over having a novel assigned in class for reading comprehension quizzes or exams. Unlike everyone else, I never really saw it as a punishment or as a chore. Unless they were terribly bad, but those were usually short. The longest novel I read while in school was about 350 pages long, if I remember correctly. By my standards today, that is rather short. Back in the day it would’ve been a week full of exciting reading.

About 4 years ago I got back into video gaming and reading kind of took a back seat for me. It was easier to play a video game for an hour or two everyday than reading a book after having read Gaga knows how many pages from text books, assignments, scientific papers, class notes, etc. I would read a book every 3-4 months, if that. Quite frankly, I missed being able to devour read a new book every other week.

Last year I got back into my old reading habits, reading at least a book every month or so. I read the first three Twilight books (don’t. even. lol) in about 5 weeks and then read the last one (Breaking Dawn), in about 4 days. It was so relaxing! I moved on to The Immortal Instruments series (City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass) and from there I read The Hunger Games trilogy. Reading became part of my life once again!

It was thanks to my current Android phone that I realized that being able to read on the go, even if I don’t have the actual book with me, is very practical. Being a guy it is more difficult to carry books everywhere, mainly because I think man purses are terrible, ugly things…and because I will not carry a book bag everywhere I go. I found myself reading on my phone a lot while on campus and I soon realized that I wasted a lot of hours per week while on campus just waiting around for the next class to start. While I could carry a book to campus with me, I already carry enough with my notebooks, lab coat, text books and sometimes even my laptop.

If only I could have a device small and light enough to carry with me everywhere…

Something that didn’t make my eyes tired like a computer screen does…

Something that reads like paper…

BEHOLD!

I cannot say enough good things about this gadget. It reads beautifully, it’s light, it’s easy to use, it’s comfortable, it’s customizable, it’s everything I needed and more. I’ve found myself reading so much more now that I can take my books everywhere with me. While it will never be able to replace the feeling and joy of reading a physical book it is a practical alternative for when you can’t or don’t want to take that almost-too-thick book with you. It’s a good complimentary reading source.
